Dr. Chet Udell performs Optron at DaVinci Days

It All Started When …

Chet Udell was invited to perform the Optron at the annual DaVinci Days Festival in Corvallis Oregon June of 2019. Myles de Bastion, Founder & Executive Director at CymaSpace in Portland Oregon happened to be in the audience. de Bastion is a deaf musician and develops technology and art installations that enable sound to be experienced as light and vibration. CymaSpace is a non-profit incubator that facilitates arts & cultural events that are inclusive of the Deaf & Hard-of-Hearing.

After the DaVinci event, de Bastion contacted Dr. Udell to pursue a collaboration to add new tactile and haptics features to the instrument, as well as producing an Opensource Optron kit that could be assembled by hobbyists of wide skill levels.

Enter the CapStone Team…

An Oregon State University senior engineering capstone team comprised of 3 Electrical and Computer Engineering and 1 Computer Science undergraduate students will be working with Udell and CymaSpace to create these new technologies and features. The blog below will be an ongoing report of their progress throughout the academic year.
